On 09 Nov 2023, Officials from Lhasa City in the Tibet Autonomous Region held a press conference on the 3rd to introduce that so far, the Tibet S5 Line Lhasa-Zedang Expressway Project has completed a total investment of 9.32 billion yuan (RMB, the same below), and the progress has reached 95%. Among them, the roadbed project, bridge and culvert project are all completed, 74% of the road surface project is completed, 86% of the protection project is completed, and 70% of the traffic safety project is completed. Currently, construction work such as asphalt concrete paving and installation of mechanical and electrical equipment in the tunnel are underway..
Xi Wenbo, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Lhasa Municipal Transportation Bureau, introduced that the S5 line spans Lhasa and Shannan cities. The starting point is located in Deqing Town, Dazi District, Lhasa City, forming an overpass with the G4218 Yaye Expressway. It goes south along the Duoxiong Lang Valley and crosses Guigala Mountain in the form of a tunnel. After exiting the tunnel, it continues southward along the Morang Valley and ends in Shannan City. Samye Town is connected to the special highway from Gonggar Airport to Zedang. The entire route is 47 kilometers long, with a bridge-to-tunnel ratio of 67%.
There are a total of 11 bridges on the S5 line, including 4 super bridges with a total length of 14 kilometers, 7 large bridges with a total length of 3.9 kilometers, and one tunnel with a length of 12.9 kilometers and a maximum burial depth of 1,152 meters. The total investment of the S5 line project is 9.8 billion yuan..
In terms of increasing the income of farmers and herdsmen, since the construction of the Tibet S5 line began in 2016, the project has paid a total of 1.32 billion yuan in wages to migrant workers inside and outside the region and 1.15 billion yuan in machinery rental fees. From January to October this year, the total income of farmers and herdsmen increased by 98 million yuan.
He said that after the S5 line is completed, it will greatly shorten the travel time between Lhasa and Shannan. The driving distance will be shortened by about 65 kilometers and the time will be saved by about 40 minutes. After being put into use, the G4218 Yaye Expressway – Line S5 – Qunai Expressway can form a loop, and the emergency support capabilities of Lhasa and Shannan cities will be further improved.
