Cmde Anil Jai Singh

Commodore Anil Jai Singh is a Naval veteran and is presently Vice President of the Indian Maritime Foundation, India’s leading NGO in the maritime domain and heads its Delhi branch besides being the Senior Vice President of a leading European MNC in India. He is also an Honorary Adjunct Fellow of the National Maritime Foundation and Vice President of the Navy Foundation, Delhi Chapter . He has formerly co-chaired the National Defence and Aerospace Committee of ASSOCHAM, a leading Indian industry organisation and has also been a member of the Defence Audit Advisory Board.

In his naval career spanning more than three decades as a submariner from where he took premature retirement in March 2011, he had the distinction of five command tenures at sea including the command of four submarines and a Fleet ship. He also served in the Directorates of Submarine Acquisition and Naval Plans at NHQ. This was followed by a diplomatic assignment as India’s Defence and Naval Adviser in the United Kingdom and his last appointment was as the Deputy Assistant Chief (Maritime) in Perspective Planning in the MoD’s Integrated Defence Staff.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), the Submarine Warfare School (SWS), the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) and the Naval War College (NWC), he has also been an Instructor at the SWS, a Directing Staff at the NWC and the CI(Navy) at the NDA.

A post graduate in Defence and Strategic Studies, he takes keen interest in matters maritime and speaks and writes on the subject in India and abroad. He has been a regular speaker at international conferences in Europe, Turkey and Japan and at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and Singapore. He has also participated in various Track 1.5 initiatives on Expert Panels for the IORA Summit , the East Asia Summit and maritime Security in West Asia. Most recently he has been included in initiatives related to the Indo-UK Roadmap 2030 and has lectured at the NATO’s Maritime Security Centre of Excellence. He writes regularly on maritime and foreign policy related issues for the mainstream media including the Financial Express, the Economic Times and various other leading Indian defence journals and has contributed chapters for books on national security. He has also written for Maritime Affairs, the UK’s Naval Review, Germany’s Naval Forces and on various internet portals including the ADU, the Diplomat and CIMSEC amongst others on Procurement issues, indigenisation, maritime strategy and the Indo-Pacific.
