Indo-Japanese Cooperation in Indo Pacific

21st century is widely acknowledged as the Century of Asia. In this century the Centre of gravity of global politics has shifted back to Asia. South China Sea seems to be the epicenter of the tremors that is rocking the world today.

The shock waves that is shaking the very foundations of the rule based existing world order and  that emanates from SCS are actually catalyzed by the Chinese penchant for revisionism associated with its rise. Taiwan crisis, Nine dash syndrome, Spratly, Paracel and Senkaku island disputes, Cartographic aggressions against its neighbors, physical aggression against India at Indo-China border, reckless investments in strategic infrastructure in vulnerable countries under the umbrella of  BRI , formation of the String of Pearls in the IOR, Wolf Warriors diplomacy and disruption of supply chains etc are but few of its many symptomatic manifestations. They are like different notes of the same grand symphony orchestrated by China.

The major Asian players having deep stakes in this unfolding drama apart from China are -Japan, Australia, ASEAN and India. Non Asian powers who also have different kinds of  stakes in this area are US, European Union, UK, France and Russia.

Some of the inimical activities of China mentioned above have forced the impacted nations to re-align their equations with each other in recent times. Dormant old groupings like QUAD, ADMM-Plus, Five Eyes,  have been revived and galvanized. New regional security alliances like AUKUS, the QUAD-plus, the Indo-Pacific Economic Forum etc have come up. NATO too has turned  its attention towards Indo-Pacific and gearing itself up for the big event. As a result, a multi-layered and mostly overlapping circles of alliances and arrangements have come up in the Indo-Pacific region giving a very confusing, kaleidoscopic picture of the overall security architecture of this region. The coming talk will try to de-clutter that confusion.

This talk will also try to explore the mystique of Indo-Japanese ties playing an important role in this process. What are India’s and Japan’s major concerns and vital interests in SCS and Indo-Pacific ?  What is it in India that attracted the erst while Japanese PM Shinzo Abe to forge such a personal close relation with PM Modi?  What is that brought these two remote nations together to become trusted partners in Indo-Pacific?  What kind of role Japan is playing in South Asia and IOR and why ?

To discuss above we will have with us Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, the former Chief of Integrated Defence staff and former FOC-in-C, Western Naval Command who is an authority on anything related to India’s Maritime affairs in Indo Pacific and Dr Satoru Nagao, who is an accomplished and acclaimed Japanese scholar and a fellow of Hudson Institute USA specialising in Indo-Pacic. While Admiral Sinha is joining us from Texas, USA, Dr Nagaon is joining us from Tokyo. Welcome Admiral Sinha sir and Dr Nagaon to the IIRF platform.

For the kind information of all, the duration of the above talk will be one and a half hours which would include the questions from the audience.  The discourse will be in “question-answer” format in which the moderator will pose relevant questions to both the speakers alternately to elicit from them their as well as their countries perspectives on issues related to Indo-Pacific and its geopolitics.

To attend this interesting talk on Indo-Japanese ties in Indo-pacific scheduled at 9 AM on 5th August,2023. The google link to join the live discussion is given below . 👇👇👇👇👇👇 Indo-Japanese Cooperation in Indo Pacific
