THE INDUS CONCLAVE – II

AFGHAN GOVERNMENT THROWS IN THE TOWEL AND CAPITULATES MEEKLY : WHAT NEXT

The situation in Afghanistan, as predicted, has taken a turn for the worse. The three hundred thousand Afghan Army have capitulated without offering even an iota of resistance. The Government of Ghani has resigned and talks are underway for a peaceful transfer of power to Taliban. What led to such sudden collapse of the Government with the backing of a powerful Army and US support is intriguing, unfathomable and nothing short of a paradox. Has there been a tacit deal between  US and Taliban which includes safe exit for US  troops from Afghanistan ? The entire scenario has changed which has left even the experts stunned. Taliban has moved with lightning speed while US is still to complete its full withdrawal.

The Afghan Provinces have fallen like nine pins without offering any resistance.

IIRF had organised a webinar in April this year to discuss the situation post US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan. Recording of our last program can be watched here.  https://youtu.be/_QL6iL8LXjg

Two months down the line matters seem to have taken a dramatic turn . The poor victims have been the unarmed civilian , women and children. Sensing an opportunity, Pakistan has seized the initiative and is exploiting the situation with China watching from the side-lines. Pakistan appears to have upstaged everyone in this game of charade and have emerged as a key player in this whole situation. The future appears very complex and fraught with serious repercussion in this region with five nuclear powers in the fray.

Where does one go from here. What are the stakes for India. Does India have an ace up it sleeve and will She come up with a surprise.

As of now things are very hazy and the situation is fast developing by the hour. As events unfold a clear picture may emerge in the next 72 hours. We are keeping a close watch on the new developments and will keep you all posted as and when things change. Please watch for our updates

To discuss the issue our original panel have been invited to share their perspectives on the subject. We are also planning to invite few experts from other Think Tanks for their views. Accordingly we will revise the time plan to enable greater interaction during the question answer session

To listen to IIRF detail analysis and assessment  along with the history, terrain, background of this crisis into making, please listen to our discourse by the same expert speakers of April 15 , 2021 recorded  during Indus Conclave – I  held on  Afghanistan at the beginning of this year –  https://youtu.be/_QL6iL8LXjg
